GEORGE TOWN:
Residents living near a large sinkhole in Tanjung Bungah are concerned about their safety and the possible damage to their properties.

The sinkhole appeared after a road leading to a newly-built housing area in Beverly Hills collapsed early this morning due to continuous rain since yesterday.

“We have nearly 200 residents living in two blocks here and the on-going hill development projects are believed to be the cause of soil erosion every time it rains here,” Surin Condominium Joint Management Committee chairman Jasmand Ng said today.

He said the residents had expressed concern over the ongoing hill development projects in the vicinity and those close to the hill at Solok Tanjung Bungah as they feared the projects would cause landslides or floods in these areas.

Continuous rain lasting 17 hours and strong winds since 12.30pm yesterday have paralysed George Town and Seberang Prai, in addition to triggering landslides and uprooting trees.
