SHAH ALAM: A man was charged in the Sessions Court here today with causing grievous hurt on Umno supreme council member Sohaimi Shahadan last week.

However, no plea was recorded from Muhamad Ikhwan Khairi, 27, after the charge was read out before judge Rihaida Rafie, who allowed an application by the defence for the accused to be sent for psychiatric observation.

Lawyer Mohd Hazrin Alif Wahab, representing Muhamad Ikhwan, applied for his client to undergo mental observation for a month at the Hospital Bahagia Tanjong Rambutan, Ulu Kinta, Perak.

Ikhwan was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt on Sohaimi, 48, by stabbing him in the back of the head with a knife at a house in Jalan Desa Mocis 3, Sungai Pelong, near here, about 8.45pm on Oct 27.

The charge, under Section 326 of the Penal Code, carries a jail sentence of up to 20 years and fine, or whipping, if found guilty.

Ikhwan was also charged in the Magistrate’s Court here with causing hurt on Sohaimi’s brother-in-law, Mohd Zulkifli Zainal, 38, with a knife at the same place, time and date.

The charge, under Section 324 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to three years, or fine, or whipping, or any two of the punishments, if found guilty.

No plea was recorded and Magistrate Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin also ordered the accused to be sent to Hospital Bahagia Tanjong Rambutan for a month for mental observation.
