IPOH:
Police are investigating the case of a Perak assemblyman accused of beating a woman at the end of last month.

Ipoh district police chief ACP Mohd Ali Tamby said police had received five reports from political party leaders and NGOs on the matter.

“The investigation will go on although the woman who was allegedly beaten had withdrawn the police report she made,” he said in a statement here today.

The assemblyman, who is from an opposition party, was accused of punching the woman on her cheek after a misunderstanding.

He was also alleged to have taken her money and personal items.

Meanwhile, Perak MyPPP Youth chief Mohamed Nor Fadhzil Sahul Hamid and two NGO members lodged a report at the Sungai Senam police station here today on the matter which has gone viral on social media.

Fadhzil urged the authorities to investigate whether the allegation was true.

“This is a barbaric act and should not have been made by an assemblyman. Punching a woman does not reflect well on one who is an elected representative.

“We are also telling the opposition party to explain the matter. If the incident is true, action should be taken against the assemblyman.”
