The PPBM chairman said Hadi should repent and rescind a controversial portion of his address called “Amanat Hadi” (Hadi’s mandate), which he said had led to a deep split among Malay-Muslims in the country.
“What right does Hadi and PAS have to denounce (‘mengkafirkan’) those who do not join their party as infidels?
“Where in the Quran or Hadith does it say that only by being a PAS member would a person be a Muslim?
“Are the 1.7 billion Muslims in the whole world not Muslims because they have not entered into PAS?” he said in his blog posting on chedet.com today.
Delivered in Kampung Banggol, Kuala Terengganu, on April 7, 1981, the “Amanat Hadi” had, among other things, questioned Muslims who joined Umno.
On Oct 24, PAS’ media organ Harakah ran a commentary to support Hadi’s demands to Mahathir over the last few months to repent, especially over the deadly police siege on the village of Memali, Kedah, in November 1985, during Mahathir’s rule as prime minister.
Mahathir, 92, claimed that the “Amanat Hadi” had contributed to the incident where 14 villagers and four police officers were killed.
Violence erupted when the villagers tried to protect religious preacher and local PAS leader Ibrahim Mahmud, also known as Ibrahim Libya, from arrest under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for alleged deviant teachings.
PAS had then rejected the allegation made against Ibrahim, who was among those killed.
Mahathir said he was aware that many people had given their allegiance to Hadi, claiming that they were so obsessed with his teachings that they accepted whatever allegations he made without question.
He also accused Hadi of defending the alleged malpractices of current prime minister and Umno president Najib Razak even though PAS would lose while Umno would win the upcoming general election (GE14) with Hadi’s help.
“But PAS will still manipulate Islam,” he claimed, adding that PAS had demanded for hudud laws to be implemented.
A bill to amend the Syariah Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355), to impose harsher shariah punishments, had been dropped.
“The bill has been postponed over and over again. But PAS still uses the bill issue to attract political support for itself,” Mahathir said.
“That’s PAS. Before there was PAS, the Malay people were united and bonded together, as required by Islam,” he added.
