KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said says Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali had directed the police to conduct a further probe into 1MDB, despite the top cop’s claim on Sept 20 that they had concluded investigations into the state-owned fund.

In a written parliamentary reply to Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong), Azalina said the instructions were given on Oct 24.

“As the investigation is still ongoing, any revelations about the details can affect and prejudice the ongoing probe,” she said.

Gobind had asked the prime minister to state the status of the 1MDB probe, and the reasons for its delay in completion.

This followed remarks by former inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar, who said on April 12 that the investigation was complete.

Khalid also said investigation papers had been submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).

On Sept 20, Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the police had concluded their investigations into 1MDB.

He said there were no new developments to report until new instructions were issued, adding that any such instructions would come from Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) or the cabinet.

Police formed an investigation team in April 2016 to scrutinise the PAC report on 1MDB, a day after the committee tabled its report in Parliament.

In June this year, Khalid said the AGC had directed police to conduct further probes into the 1MDB issue, based on investigation papers which he said had been submitted earlier.

The AGC and police have been under pressure to wrap up investigations after the US Department of Justice on June 15 filed the latest in its series of 1MDB-related civil forfeiture suits.
