KUALA LUMPUR: Three Rela members who were allegedly assaulted by a man with a “Datuk Seri” title last Friday will receive commendation letters for their professionalism in handling the situation.

Rela director-general Zulkifli Abidin said the trio’s patience in not retaliating despite being threatened and assaulted should be taken as an example by other Rela members.

“In appreciation of their commitment to their job, I will present each of them with a commendation today,” he said in a statement.

He said their attitudes in handling the situation proved that Rela did its job by practising good values and avoiding confrontation.

In the 6.30am incident last Friday, Melvin Cheong Mun Khai, 19; Lee Weng Poh, 27; and Leong Jiun Jie, 21 were injured in the head, eye and abdomen when allegedly hit and kicked by the “Datuk Seri”.

This happened after they asked the man to move his Toyota Vellfire as the vehicle was obstructing traffic. However, the man refused to do so.

Yesterday, Selangor Criminal Investigation Department head SAC Fadzil Ahmat said police had identified the suspect, aged 29, and urged him to surrender himself to facilitate the investigation.
