In a statement today, Attorney General Mohamed Apandi Ali said the taskforce was formed on Oct 16 in view of the seriousness of the allegations that could affect Dzulkifli’s integrity.
“The AGC has formed a taskforce to closely monitor the investigations of the alleged offences under Section 498 of the Penal Code and other related offences,” Apandi said.
Section 498 of the Penal Code deals with “enticing or taking away or detaining with a criminal intent a married woman”.
The section states: Whoever takes or entices away any woman who is and whom he knows, or has reason to believe, to be the wife of any other man, from that man, or from any person having the care of her on behalf of that man, with intent that she may have illicit intercourse with any person, or conceals, or detains with that intent any such woman, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with fine or with both.
The AGC also cautioned and reminded all parties to refrain from making any comments that could jeopardise the ongoing investigations.
“In line with the current best practices of our prosecutorial policy, we will also ensure that the investigations will not discourage whistle blowers or competent witnesses from coming forward to assist the investigations, so that the truth shall prevail,” Apandi said in the statement.
The AGC also assured the public that the AG, in his capacity as the public prosecutor as provided under Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution, shall exercise his discretion on this matter judiciously and in accordance with the law.
“The AGC is steadfast in upholding justice and the rule of law,” the statement said.
Dzulkefli has been embroiled in controversy after a video emerged which apparently showed him with another man’s wife.
However, two days ago, an angry Dzukifli had said he would not give in to pressure from personal attacks and would continue his duties without fear or favour.
Describing the recent attacks against him as dirty and despicable, Dzulkifli said the allegations were aimed at tarnishing his reputation and discrediting the MACC’s efforts in combating corruption.
“We will not bow down to pressure and we will continue to carry out our duties and responsibilities to ensure that the country is rid of those who are involved in corruption and power abuse,” he told TV3 in an interview.
“I’m confident that these attacks were made following the MACC’s ‘aggressive’ actions against those involved in corruption and power abuse,” he had said.
