KOTA KINABALU:
Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) Youth chief Azis Jamman and two Umno Youth divisional leaders were released today after being held in remand in connection with a graft investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Azis and Tawau Umno Youth chief Ariffin Kassim were freed on RM50,000 bail each, with RM30,000 to be deposited.

Tenom Umno Youth head Jamawi Jaafar was released on RM20,000 bail.

All three were arrested on Oct 10 during MACC’s investigation of suspected embezzlement involving RM1.5 billion in rural development funds earmarked for Sabah.

The next day, they were remanded for five days, after which the order was extended for another three days.

The RM1.5 billion was said to be part of RM7.5 billion allocated for water, electricity and road infrastructure development projects.

Warisan vice-president Peter Anthony had also been arrested in connection with the case and is now out on bail.

Warisan president Shafie Apdal’s brother Hamid and Hamid’s son-in-law Manzur Hussein Awal Khan are currently under remand as part of the investigation.

Opposition leaders claimed the investigation was politically motivated to smear the image of Warisan in the run-up to the 14th general election but Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and MACC denied the allegation, saying the agency operated independently.
