GEORGE TOWN:
The Penang education department will not allow a group of private citizens to hold a “Penang and DAP” event, as inspired by the “Umno and Merdeka” event at a school in Putrajaya.

State education director Shaari Osman told Sinar Harian that he had received a letter applying for the event, adding that the application was “incomplete”.

“Yes, I have just received the letter and have gone through its content.

“The letter was not complete as it did not have the signature of the applicants.

“I would like to confirm that we will not allow any activity with political elements to be held in this state,” he told the daily.

In what appeared to be a mockery of an Umno-themed event in Putrajaya, DAP’s Joshua Woo and seven others had written to the department to hold a DAP-themed event next year.

Woo said the proposed date for the event would be sometime in March next year when the opposition would celebrate the 10th anniversary of its rule in Penang.

He said it was not to celebrate the DAP per se, but to recognise the rapid progress experienced by the state in the past 10 years of opposition rule and the glorious history of the state.

He also stressed that the proposed event was being carried out in his personal capacity, along with seven others, and not by the DAP.
