“We don’t condone what he did,” Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, told reporters here this morning.
Yesterday, Jamal had smashed up cartons of beer outside the Selangor state government office to protest against the Better Beer Festival 2017.
The Sungai Besar Umno division chief has since been arrested and is being investigated for unlawful assembly under Section 143 of the Penal Code.
Zahid said however that Umno has 191 division chiefs, and that Jamal’s actions did not represent the party leaders.
“There are 190 leaders who until today have not smashed anything,” he added.
The Better Beer Festival was initially scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur this month.
The event was cancelled after the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) rejected the organisers’ application to host it, with police also citing security reasons for disallowing it.
Following this, Utusan Malaysia reported Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali as saying that the Selangor government would not prevent the beer fest from being held in the state.
However, Azmin has denied giving approval for the event.
