PETALING JAYA:
A Malaysian urologist has been barred from applying to be a registered medical practitioner in Australia for the next two and a half years over a charge of falsifying overtime claims at a hospital in Perth.

According to a Western Australia State Administrative Tribunal report, Dr Azhar Amir Hamzah was found to have doctored patient records at the Fiona Stanley Hospital, to claim for overtime he was not entitled to.

He was charged with professional misconduct during his year-long international fellowship.

“The total financial benefit derived by the respondent (Dr Azhar) as a result of his conduct was A$7,093.57 (RM23,551.79),” the tribunal’s report read.

Azhar was also ordered to pay A$11,500 (RM38,241) in costs.

The tribunal found him to have claimed overtime on 12 occasions, besides 61 recall claims between June 16, 2015 and June 15, 2016, all of which were false.

He was also found to have falsified patient records on four occasions in the same period.

Azhar has since returned the money received through the false claims and “expressed remorse as to his offending conduct”. He also skipped the final hearing and agreed to a resolution.

He is now a doctor at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.

It was reported that Azhar was once the personal doctor of late PAS leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, and had recently won a Maal Hijrah award from the Penang Malays Association.
