
In a statement, it said it had collected over 10,000 signatures in support of its campaign on www.change.org.
The petition, which started on Sept 29, will be submitted to local councils including the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), as well as the PPBM leadership and the Pakatan Harapan secretary-general.
The Selangor PPBM youth wing also rubbished claims that it was meddling in others’ way of life by opposing Oktoberfest, saying that alcohol-based parties were not part of Malaysian culture.
However, it added that it was not trying to deny the right of non-Muslims to consume alcohol, or demanding an outright ban on it.
“Such statements are meant to confuse and divide the people as well as to sow hatred,” it said.
It said many who defended “immoral” events would often cite freedom of expression while labelling those who opposed such events as “extremist, fundamentalist or intolerant”.
It also warned that freedom without limits could pave the way to gay parties and legalisation of same-sex marriages in the future.
Recent objections to Oktoberfest began with calls from PAS for a halt to the Better Beer Festival 2017.
The event was initially slated to be held on Oct 6 and 7 at the Publika Shopping Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, but DBKL rejected the organisers’ application to host the event.
This was despite it having been held in the city before.
Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun later said that the event was cancelled due to security reasons as militants were planning to sabotage the festival.
