PJ land deal: Chew slams Pua for not knowing his facts

Former PJ Utara MP Chew Mei Fun says she was not involved in the SS25 land deal as MPs did not sit in at district land committee meetings.

PETALING JAYA: Former PJ Utara MP Chew Mei Fun has slammed DAP’s Tony Pua for dragging her into the controversy surrounding a plot of land allegedly purchased by Selangor MCA, which she says did not involve her in any way.

Chew, who was MP from 1999 to 2008, said Pua likely had “bad intentions” and that was why he chose to drag her name into the land deal.

“I know Selangor MCA applied for a piece of land.

“I am not the one who applied for it and I am not the one who dealt with it. And this is why I don’t know anything about the situation,” she told FMT.

Pua and Damansara Utama state assemblyperson Yeo Bee Hin had raised the issue of the sale of the land in SS25 to Selangor MCA in 2008 at RM1 per square foot (psf), a price normally reserved for religious institutions wishing to build places of worship.

Pua claimed the market value of the land was RM400 psf and wanted Chew to clarify if such dealings were acceptable as she was the MP for the constituency at the time the deal was struck.

He further claimed that when Barisan Nasional was in charge of the Selangor government, it had district-level land committees where MPs, state assemblymen and district officers would discuss, among others, the sale of land.

Chew however shot back, saying Pua, who is the present PJ Utara MP, had failed to do his homework as MPs did not sit in at district-level land committee meetings as he had alleged.

“It is no secret. MPs do not deal with land issues.”

She said the district-level meetings were for state assemblymen and assistant district officers, and was chaired by the district officer.

The MPs, she said, sat in for monthly meetings, known as district development meetings, that was attended by a district officer and heads of department.

“It is a monthly meeting for MPs. It is a platform to monitor federal projects in the constituency.

“Nothing to do with land,” she pointed out.

She advised Pua to learn more about the administration of land matters in the state before dragging her into an issue that she was not involved in.

“Or perhaps Tony Pua has bad intentions and purposely wanted to drag me into this land issue. Or he does not know the administration and structure of how the land office works.

“He sits in his air-conditioned office and reads his own documents and accuses everyone.”

Yeo had said she first learnt about the sale of the land in question when Selangor MCA applied to rezone it for commercial use.
