Firemen rescue woman trapped in flaming shophouse

Firemen save the worker, in her 30s, after she is found unconscious from smoke inhalation due to the raging fire at the George Town world heritage site.

Quick-acting firemen saved the life of a woman after she was trapped inside one of the three double-storey shophouses at the George Town world heritage site in Jalan Pinang here that caught fire today.

Lebuh Pantai Fire and Rescue operations commander Rozairi Abdul Rahim said the fire was believed to have started from a shop selling souvenirs at 9.43am.

“When we arrived, the fire had engulfed the three shophouses selling handicraft.

“The woman was rescued thanks to the quick action of firemen,” he said here today.

The worker, in her 30s, was found unconscious from smoke inhalation and later rushed to the Penang Hospital for treatment.

Rozairi said five fire engines with 25 firefighters succeeded in bringing the blaze under control by 10.32am.

The incident also caused a 2km-long traffic jam at all roads around Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (Komtar) following the closure of Jalan Pinang to enable firemen to carry out their duties.
