Nothing to be concerned about, says academic on PKR feud

Rafizi Ramli and Latheefa Koya are not the top two party leaders, so their fight has little impact, if any, on the opposition coalition, says retired lecturer.

PETALING JAYA:
While the opposition and its supporters, as well as many political observers are having a grim outlook on the recent infighting in PKR, a political analyst says there is no real concern for the party or the opposition.

Calling the open feud between PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli and central leadership council member Latheefa Koya a small matter, Ahmad Atory Hussain said he does not see any impact on the opposition’s chances in the next general election (GE14).

“I think the reason for the feud is two things, that is, miscommunication and misinformation. It is a small issue.

“So, it won’t have any impact on Pakatan Harapan, to the extent that people would say it will split the opposition,” the retired political science lecturer told FMT.

He added however, that if it was a feud between the number one and number two in the party, such as PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and her deputy Azmin Ali, or Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and Salahuddin Ayub, then there could be some serious impact.

Atory also urged Latheefa and Rafizi to get their act together for the good of the party.

“Rafizi and Latheefa should know better, they are experienced. There are other matters that they should pay attention to.

“Khalid Ibrahim or Kajang Move are all old issues. It is unnecessary to bring out these matters,” he said about the infamous strategy employed by PKR in 2014 to oust Khalid as Selangor menteri besar and replace him with Anwar Ibrahim, by forcing a by-election in Kajang, which is a state seat.

Atory added that PKR needed to focus on 1MDB, unemployment, the Rohingya issue, as they are among the more pressing matters that need discussion.

“We should also talk about the never-ending issue of GST.”

Atory said that the opposition keeps talking about change, but how can they effect any change if they are just feuding with each other all the time.
