PETALING JAYA:
Police have arrested the driver of the vehicle which ploughed into four Paralympian cyclists at the KL-Kuala Selangor Expressway (Latar) today.

The driver was detained after he lodged a police report at the Kampung Baru Subang police station a few hours after the accident, reported the New Straits Times.

According to police, he has been taken to the Kuala Selangor traffic police department for further action.

Kuala Selangor police chief Superintendent Ruslan Abdullah said police were investigating the case under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Section 43 of the Act stipulates that anyone found guilty of driving without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other road users, shall be punished with a minimum RM4,000 fine but not exceeding RM10,000.

Those found guilty under the law were also liable to a maximum of 12 months’ jail.

The accident occurred near Km12.6 of the Latar Expressway at 10.50am on Thursday.

National cycling coach Johari Nayan was training with his para-cycling team of Mohd Nor Rizuan Zainal, 31; Khairul Azwan Wahab, 25; Nur Syafiq Suhaimy, 19; and Khairul Nizam Mohd Ali, 23; when a four-wheel drive rammed into them.

The victims suffered multiple injuries and were sent to Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.

Ruslan had earlier said the athletes were riding in the middle lane upon approaching the Bandar Tasik Puteri exit, as they were heading towards Rawang from Ijok.

“Police believe that the four-wheel drive was changing lanes to get into the Bandar Tasik Puteri exit when it ploughed into the victims,” Ruslan said.
