KUALA LUMPUR: PKR denies having approached Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar, from PSM, to defend his seat under the former’s banner in the next general election (GE14).

PKR information chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh said nothing specific concerning Jeyakumar’s candidacy in Sungai Siput has been discussed.

“At this juncture nothing specific has been discussed, whether it is contested by PSM’s Dr Michael Jeyakumar using our logo or theirs,” he told reporters after the Pakatan Harapan secretariat council meeting.

Syed Ibrahim was asked to comment on Jeyakumar’s revelation that PKR had asked him to defend his seat under its ticket in GE14.

The two-term Sungai Siput MP told FMT that PKR had approached him with an offer a “few months ago”.

Yesterday, Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming released a statement in which he said that DAP would be fielding a candidate to contest in the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat.

“In view of PSM’s unilateral decision to contest in DAP-held seats, PH will contest in Sungai Siput.

“This is to allow the Sungai Siput voters to choose a coalition capable of replacing Umno and BN,” he said.

Jeyakumar had defeated MIC deputy minister SK Devamany in the last general election, held on May 5, 2013, winning with a 2,793 majority.

He had previously defeated former MIC president Samy Vellu in the 2008 general election.
