Former RTM announcer Helan Abu dies at 74

He was a popular news reader and host for programmes like Bakat TV before his retirement in 1998.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former deputy director-general of Broadcasting, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Mohd Helan Abu died at the National Heart Institute (IJN) here last night.

Broadcasting director-general Abu Bakar Ab Rahim, when contacted by Bernama, said Helan died at 11.53pm.

A well-known RTM personality, Helan, 74, was laid to rest at the Section 9 Muslim burial ground, Kota Damansara, this morning.

Helan had served as a radio announcer, news reader and programme host before his retirement in 1998.

Among the programmes made popular by Helan was Bakat TV, a talent contest.
