PETALING JAYA: State broadcast station Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) today admitted mistakes on a medal tally table which mixed up eight flags of participating countries.

A screenshot published on Singaporean website Mothership.sg showed the column for Singapore mistakenly labelled as Thailand, and Vietnam’s flag labelled as Singapore’s.

Meanwhile, Singapore was marked with the flag of Thailand, Thailand with that of Indonesia, and the Indonesian flag with that of Vietnam.

Mistakes were also seen in the flags of the Philippines, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia.

Only the flags of Malaysia, Brunei and Timor-Leste were spared the blunders.

The Star Online quoted RTM director-general of broadcasting, Abu Bakar Ab Rahim as admitting the mistakes during its news segments on Thursday and Friday.

Abu Bakar said the mistakes occurred at the production level while attempts were made to update the results.

“We will take action in order to prevent something similar from happening again,” he said.

The Singapore website meanwhile ran another screenshot showing Malaysian swimmer Keith Lim Kit Sern’s name accompanied by the flag of Singapore, during the telecast of the 50m freestyle final.

The flag bloopers came days after anger was sparked across Indonesia when the republic’s red and white flag was published upside down in the official booklet distributed at the opening ceremony last week.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had immediately issued an apology to the Indonesian government, and directed fresh copies of the booklet to be printed.
