Ilham Centre’s Mohamad Hisomuddin Bakar explained this was because Pakatan Harapan (PH) had been unable to offer anything that could win over the settlers and they would continue to reject the opposition in the 14th GE.
“If PH can offer a change that is better than what is promised by the BN, there could be a change of heart,” he said at a forum last night.
Last month Prime Minister Najib Razak announced six incentives for Felda settlers in the form of debt disposals, incentive payments, the setting-up of a special fund and special grant as well as a housing incentive.
Hisomuddin said although the incentives offered to Felda settlers were not that attractive, they remained a choice nevertheless.
He revealed that research conducted in seven Felda settlements in the past three months found the opposition’s efforts to garner support were ineffective.
“The research found that while PPBM’s arrival created some excitement in Felda settlements, the party had no impact on the youth,” he said.
Hisomuddin poured cold water on the opposition’s claim that Felda settlements were no longer BN strongholds.
“The perception is not true as the ruling coalition still retains a strong grip in such areas.
“The opposition only gained some ground in the towns in Felda areas,” he said.
Hisomuddin also said he believed voters in Malay-majority constituencies would still support BN and these areas included Tanjong Karang and Kuala Selangor.
“Young Malay voters will help BN maintain the status quo and they do not show any wind of change.”
His research was done in two parliamentary constituencies and involved 1,000 respondents.
It was ongoing and would be extended to other areas, Hisomuddin said.
