First conviction under Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017

Man gets 6-month jail term for hugging 15-year-old from behind in a hotel room.

A bakery assistant became the first person to be charged under the new Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and received six months imprisonment after pleading guilty to physical contact and embracing a 15-year-old student illicitly last month.

Sessions Court judge Yong Zarida Sazali ordered Mohd Nazrin Rabuan, 21, who committed the offence at a hotel in Bandar Puteri Puchong between 3am and 5am on July 20, to serve the sentence from his arrest on July 31.

The charge under Section 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 carries a jail term not exceeding 20 years and liable to whipping on conviction.

According to the facts of the case presented by deputy public prosecutor Nordalina Ali, the victim had befriended Nazrin’s friend through the social media app “wechat”.

The victim had, on her birthday, followed her boyfriend and Nazrin to the hotel and stayed the night there.

At around 3am, the teenager started crying and asked to be sent home, which prompted Nazrin to approach and embrace her from the back.
