KUALA LUMPUR: The government has asked social media giants such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to remove fake accounts that have been used for negative purposes.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak said evidence was presented to the companies to get their assistance in removing the fake accounts.

“Some of these fake accounts are using foreign platforms and thus far, we have been negotiating with the companies and this has resulted in action being taken against these fake accounts.

“For fake accounts hosted locally, there should be no problem, we can remove them,” he told reporters at the Special Affairs Department (Jasa) Aidilfitri open house here last night.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Jasa director-general Mohd Puad Zarkashi.

Between January and June, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) received close to 1,500 complaints pertaining to fake accounts on social media platforms that had been used for negative purposes, including dissemination of fake news and defamatory attacks against state leaders.
