KUALA LUMPUR: The youth and sports ministry has given its assurance that the Shah Alam Stadium, which was damaged during heavy rain and strong winds last Thursday, will be ready in time for the SEA Games.

Its minister Khairy Jamaluddin said a visit by the ministry’s secretary-general Lokman Hakim Ali yesterday revealed that several panels needed to be replaced, owing to the bad weather on Thursday.

“The ministry, the Selangor government and the Shah Alam City Council are discussing scope of repairs.

“We have just slightly over a month before the games begin. I have approved. Now it is just getting the scope and also procurement.

“It will be done before the games. We know what needs to be done,” he said in a press conference here today after the Petronas Young Professionals TN50 Dialogue.

Khairy said while they may not be able to replace every single panel that is necessary, they will ensure it is safe for fans and players.

The New Straits Times reported that the stadium had parts of its roof blown off by strong winds following heavy rain during the friendly match between the Malaysian and Myanmar Under-22 teams on Thursday.

The incident forced the match to be suspended for several minutes.

It is estimated that repair works could cost around RM1 million for the venue, which is also set to host the upcoming Sea Games football matches.
