PAS is its own worst enemy, says Amanah

Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub claims PAS' increasing friendliness towards Umno is chasing its own hardcore supporters away.

PETALING JAYA:
Amanah predicts that most of PAS’ supporters will end up voting for Pakatan Harapan (PH) come the next general election (GE14).

This prediction contradicts the views of both Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) adviser Kua Kia Soong and Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak.

On Saturday, Kua had claimed that because PH had chosen former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its chairman, the Malay vote will be with PAS.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Salleh had claimed that without the support of PAS voters, PH had no chance of winning Putrajaya.

Speaking to FMT, Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub said these predictions were made by those who had not “heard the whispers” on the ground.

“They’re delusional. If they’re ready to put their ears to the ground, they will realise that PH is getting even more support as PAS gets closer to Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN).”

In fact, he said, Amanah did not have to paint PAS in a bad light as PAS was doing “a fine job” on its own.

“If we were to say that PAS is trying to get close to Umno, people will assume we’re only doing so because we are in Amanah and are ‘always saying bad things about PAS’.

“Meanwhile, PAS has proven itself that it is indeed trying to get closer to Umno. PAS’ hardcore supporters cannot accept this.”

He cited the recent PAS central muktamar in April where the party had chosen to sever ties with PKR as well as the appearance of its president Abdul Hadi Awang next to Agro-based Industry Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek in May as some of the examples where PAS had seemed as though it was aligning itself with Umno.

“Hadi – appearing next to Shabery Cheek in Terengganu – created a lot of dissatisfaction among PAS’ hardcore supporters,” he claimed.

On top of the PAS hardcore supporters which – as Salahuddin claims – will now support PH, he said there have also been silent members among PAS who are “secretly” with Amanah.

“This is a group Amanah calls the ‘harum manis’. Perhaps they want to join us today but because they’re living in PAS-dominant areas like Terengganu and Kelantan, they remain quiet but remain as our silent supporters.”

He said these two groups, coupled with the middle-class Malays and the non-Muslims, who would vote Amanah over PAS, made PAS’ chances of securing any kind of victory “very slim”.
