GEORGE TOWN:
A 38-year-old father of seven fell to his death from the fourth floor of his apartment block in Bukit Mertajam last night, leaving police to believe it was linked to his financial problems.

In the incident at 11.40pm, the man had waved goodbye to his 15-year-old daughter before plunging down to his death.

His body was found on the road in the car park below, police said.

He was identified as Mohd Irwan Omar. He and his 37-year-old wife were originally from Kluang, Johor. They have seven children, aged 2 to 17, with an eighth child expected soon.

One of Irwan’s teen daughters told investigators he was having trouble paying for his rent and other living expenses.

Central Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the authorities had recently stopped giving the family a monthly payout of RM300 in zakat.

His wife told police he was paying RM250 for the 660 sq ft flat.

Nik Ros said Irwan was unemployed and not insured.

He said Irwan had seven prior offences, six of them drug-related.

Nik Ros said Irwan and his family had lived in Jawi, Nibong Tebal, before moving to Bukit Mertajam recently.

The case has been classified as sudden death. The body was brought to the Bukit Mertajam hospital for a post-mortem.
