
She replaces outgoing mayor Patahiyah Ismail, 58, who is retiring. Maimunah will serve as mayor for two years until June 30, 2019.
The MPSP presidentship will be handed over to current council secretary Rozali Mohamud, a fellow of the Royal Institution of Surveyors, Malaysia.
He will serve as president until retirement on August 14, 2018.
At 738 sq km, MPSP is the largest municipality in the country.
With MPSP’s secretary post vacated by Rozali, current council engineering department chief Rosnani Mahmod will take over as council secretary.
Her appointment as secretary is until June 30, 2019.
The announcement was made by state Local Government Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow after an executive council affirmed their appointments today.
Chow said Maimunah, Rozali and Rosnani will be sworn in at the respective council’s headquarters next Monday (MPSP) and Tuesday (MBPP).
Outgoing Penang Island mayor Patahiyah was first made Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) president on Mar 1, 2010.
She succeeded retiring president Tan Cheng Chui. After the municipality was granted city status by the king, she was installed as mayor on Apr 1, 2015.
Patahiyah, an architect by training, joined MPPP’s Building Department in 1985.
Incoming Penang Island mayor Maimunah has held the MPSP president’s post since Mar 16, 2011, when she took over from Mokhtar Jait. Mokhtar was then made the state’s financial officer.
In November 2009, Maimunah was the general manager of George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), a state-linked company managing the world heritage site.
Prior to GTWHI, she spent 32 years of her career at MPPP, starting as a municipal town planner in 1985. In 2003, she was promoted to the head of the town planning department.
Meanwhile, Rozali, a surveyor by training, was first with the Valuation and Property Services Department of the finance ministry, starting in 1982.
He joined MPSP as an assistant director of the valuation department in 1990, later heading the department in 2002. On Mar 1, 2011, Rozali was made council secretary.
Incoming MPSP secretary Rosnani joined the council as an engineer in 1991, serving in that capacity until 2010. On Nov 1, 2010, she was made urban services deputy director.
In 2015, Rosnani was promoted to her current post at the engineering department.
