Voters must know who Pakatan PM is, not wait after GE14

NGO says opposition morally reprehensible if they let voters choose party they like for a particular leader, then choose leader from another party as prime minister.

KUALA LUMPUR: It is ridiculous for Pakatan Harapan (PH) not to name its prime minister-designate before the next general election (GE14), an NGO said today.

My Kuasa chief executive, Praba Ganesan said it was even morally reprehensible for PH to act in a such way. My Kuasa is an NGO that monitors the performance of elected representatives.

“Fixed coalitions simply have to name their intended prime minister. If they are asking voters to support a fixed coalition candidate, then those voters need to know who the prime minister nominee is for the coalition.

“This is so that the voters know who they are supporting as the next prime minister should PH win GE14,” Praba said during a press conference here, today.

He added that voters will feel cheated if they voted for somebody from their own party and the post of prime minister was then given to somebody else from another party.

Unlike Barisan Nasional, where Prime Minister Najib Razak is the incumbent, in the case of PH, they are asking voters to transfer their votes to parties they otherwise are unlikely to vote for in exchange for the fixed coalition to take control of the federal government.

“Which is why voters have the right to know who that presumptive nominee is for prime minister before casting their vote.

“So to leave voters helpless after election day, leaving it to the parties to decide who will be prime minister, is unfair,” Praba said.

PH component parties have been going back and forth regarding the line up of the coalition’s leadership ahead of GE14, thus causing delays in the coalition being registered formally.

The opposition won nearly 52% of the popular vote in the May 2013 election, but secured control of only 89 constituencies out of the 222 parliamentary seats contested.

“To register another coalition apart from the current BN is hard as it has always been a tradition for BN to be the only coalition in the country,” he said.
