He also refused to say if he denied the allegation, which had raised questions of his role in leading the prosecution of former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim over a charge of sodomy.
Just an hour earlier, Anwar filed a suit at the High Court here against the Malaysian government, saying the alleged payment to Shafee meant that he had been denied a fair trial.
This was the first time Shafie appeared in public since whistleblower portal Sarawak Report published documents purportedly showing two transaction slips dated Sept 11, 2013 and Feb 17, 2014, to back claims that the lawyer had received RM9.5 million from Prime Minister Najib Razak’s private bank accounts.
Both men have yet to respond to the allegation.
