The ruler agreed with Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali in maintaining the status quo in the state government after having discussed the issue of the end of the political cooperation between the Islamist party and PKR with the latter, the Selangor palace said in a statement released today.
According to the statement, the Sultan had first met with Azmin who informed him of the current situation in the state government and followed that with a meeting with Selangor PAS commisioner Sallehen Mukhyi and the three excos concerned.
Sultan Sharafuddin said he felt assured that Azmin still had the confidence of the majority of the state legislative assembly, despite suggestions that PAS would leave the coalition government altogether and rumours of three PKR elected reps leaving the party.
On May 11, PAS’ Syura Council endorsed the decision of the party’s muktamar (general assembly) on April 30 to end its “tahaluf siyasi” (political cooperation) with PKR.
This led to calls for the resignation of PAS assemblymen in the state executive council.
The three councillors are Iskandar Abdul Samad (who holds the housing, building management and urban settlement portfolio), Zaidy Abdul Talib (state infrastructure, public amenities and agro-based industry) and Yunus Hairi (Islamic Affairs).
On May 15, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the executive councillors would not budge from their posts unless they were directed to do so by Sultan Sharafuddin.
The statement from the palace also stated that the decision to maintain the status quo was made after taking into consideration the mandate given to the state government by the people of Selangor in the last general election.
