KUALA LUMPUR: PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin labelled as slanderous an allegation by an Umno minister that he had received money for the last general election from the RM2.6 billion in Prime Minister Najib Razak’s accounts.

“I swear, I did not receive a single sen (from the RM2.6 billion),” the former deputy prime minister said at a ceramah here last night.

Also present were PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad and deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir.

On Sunday, Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz, during a tell-all session with Umno Overseas Alumni Club members in Kuala Lumpur, admitted to having received RM510,000 from Najib for GE13, which comprised RM10,000 as the nomination fee for election candidates, RM200,000 for election campaign expenses and RM300,000 to be distributed to the 60 branches under his Padang Rengas parliamentary constituency.

But, he had claimed, both Muhyiddin and former rural and regional development minister Shafie Apdal had many more Umno divisions under their respective parliamentary constituencies, hence the allocation would have been much higher.

Shafie has since denied Nazri’s claim, adding the allegation was “absurd”.

Muhyiddin went on to state that the then attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail had shown him evidence concerning the donation, something which he added he had spoken about previously.

“But many, like Nazri Aziz, still don’t understand this.”

Dr Mahathir, meanwhile said the country could not take pride in the fact that an international magazine had recently mentioned Malaysia in a negative light by including Najib in a list of the least popular leaders around the globe.

Two days ago, Time magazine furnished a list of five world leaders whom it said were“less popular” than US President Donald Trump.

Apart from Najib, others in this list included Nicolas Maduro (president of Venezuela), Jacob Zuma (president, South Africa), Michel Temer (president, Brazil) and Alexis Tsipras (prime minister, Greece).

“We cannot take pride in this as the report shows how the world views Najib’s performance.”

Muhyiddin said it was embarrassing for Malaysia that Najib was less popular than Trump, who had become a divisive figure in the United States since being elected as its president.
