Even Mourinho needs time to get results, says national coach

Harimau Malaya coach Nelo Vingada says time is never enough for any coach, but he is ready to face challenge having overcome such a handicap before.

PETALING JAYA:
Nelo Vingada counts Jose Mourinho as a student of his, having known the Manchester United manager since he was young.

The new coach of the senior national squad said this in a meeting with the Malaysian media yesterday.

Asked if he had enough time to prepare Harimau Malaya for its upcoming challenges in the Asian Cup qualifying matches, Vingada said any coach would love to have more time.

“If you ask any coach that, time is always never enough.

“Jose Mourinho, a student of mine and someone I’ve known since he was a young child, has also been saying he needs two years to build the team he wants at Manchester United,” FourFourTwo (FFT) quoted Vingada as saying about his fellow Portugese, whose first season in the English Premier League ended with a disappointing sixth-place finish.

However, Vingada did not seem too concerned on the issue of timing saying he had been through such a situation before and had come through with flying colours.

“Time is something we cannot have. It is always short for any coach. Maybe in September, after I have more time to work on the players, I could show something different.

“When I arrived in Saudi it was only one month before the Asian Cup and we went on to win it. So, it really depends on the situation,” he was quoted as saying by FFT on his time as coach of the senior Saudi squad from 1996 to 1997.

That will only please many local football fans, because the only thing that matters in football is results.

However, he was quick to distance himself from making promises and instead chose to speak on the importance of working hard.

“I’m not the kind of person who promises results because results will come when work is done.

“I am sure with your understanding and help, because all of us are involved in the same target, we will be able to work to the best we can.

“The results will come with work. Any game we play, we have to fight for the best result, which is winning matches,” Vingada said, according to FFT.
