Perak police chief Hasnan Hassan said in the 3.30pm incident, a team from the Perak police headquarters conducting patrols in Air Kuning attempted to hail down the suspect’s car as it was using false number plates.
“However, the the suspect sped away. Following a high-speed chase, the suspect’s car skidded. He got out of the car and fired three shots at the policemen, who responded by firing two shots which hit him in the chest. He died on the spot,” he told reporters at the scene.
He said police recovered a pistol with a bullet still in it and three spent shells and also three machetes from the suspect’s car.
The 40-year-old suspect, he said, was also a member of the “04” gang and had seven previous criminal records from 2006 to 2013, involving robbery, murder and vehicle theft.
“We are now going after the remnants of the gang,” he added.
