PUTRAJAYA: The domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism ministry will penalise Shell over a “technical glitch” last week that saw some of the petroleum company’s stations overcharging motorists an extra RM2.01 a litre for RON95 grade petrol.

Minister Hamzah Zainudin said today he met Shell representatives yesterday for an explanation and would announce the form of the penalty “latest this week”.

Several Shell stations sold RON95 petrol at RM4.09 per litre after midnight last Wednesday following a 7-sen increase in the pump price to RM2.08 per litre.

Social media was abuzz with the news and Shell admitted there was a “technical glitch” in adjusting the pump price.

News of the wrong pricing at Shell Bagan Ajam (Butterworth), Shell Nusajaya (Johor Bahru) and Shell Salak South (Kuala Lumpur) quickly went viral.

Shell told FMT the mistake in pricing involved 160 transactions that took place over one-and-a-half hours early Thursday morning and assured that all the customers affected would be refunded.

Speaking to the media after launching the #janganlebihlebih campaign ahead of Ramadan and the coming festive season at his ministry, Hamzah said Shell was asked to show proof of the technical glitch.

He added that the ministry would carry out its own investigation to ensure the problem was not due to deliberate action.
