PKR Youth secretary Chang Lih Kang told reporters that the Peru national, who was earlier captured by a tour operator and handed over to the police, was now up to his usual tricks again.
“I don’t think police have taken any action against these people. Even the tour guides feel threatened by their presence. The police have to take serious action immediately,” Chang said at a press conference.
The Teja state assemblyman called for police to capture the Peruvian man and conduct frequent patrols in popular tourist areas.
He added that police should work together with surveillance experts to upgrade existing closed circuit TV (CCTV) cameras around the city for better monitoring.
In two separate videos taken at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur and Port Dickson, the same man was seen with a partner, casually stealing bags belonging to a tourist.
Chang said the video was provided by tourism industry players, who verified that the same man appeared in both videos.
With the videos taken on April 21 and earlier this month, that would mean that the Peruvian man had committed the theft after he was released from police custody.
“This video proves that even though he committed the crime, he was still freed and continues to rob tourists till today.
“The tour guides and tourists have already lodged several police reports, so the ball is in their (police) court,” Chang said.
