Elleyerance Hamid said he went to the station at about midnight on Feb 7, 2016.
“After receiving a call from Klang hospital, I went to Klang Utara police headquarters.
“I was led to the cell where I saw Balamurugan on the floor.
“I followed procedure. I called his name first. No response. I began examining him. I checked for his pulse. None.
“His body was stiff and cold. His pupils were dilated. I saw blood from his mouth,” he said.
After the checks, he said he came out of the cell and confirmed with the police that the detainee had passed away.
Elleyerance was relating the incident during a public hearing conducted by the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) here today.
He then filled up the “No sign of life” form and called the Klang hospital, Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, to inform them that Balamurugan was dead.
He said he had not checked any part of Balamurugan’s body as he could be tampering with evidence.
However, he acknowledged that Balamurugan was wearing the purple lock-up attire and lying in the middle of the cell when he saw his body.
Photographs displayed on a screen during the hearing showed Balamurugan wearing only purple shorts and lying close to the bars of the cell.
EAIC chairman Yaacob Md Sam had asked if Balamurugan was wearing clothes and if he was lying close to the grille when Elleyerance first arrived at the cell.
On the first day of the public hearing on May 15, Balamurugan’s wife, Natthanan Yoochomsuk, 38, said police had told her at 6am on Feb 8 that Balamurugan had been sent to the hospital as he had had an accident.
The four-day hearing ends tomorrow. A second set of hearings will be held in June.
