28,000 chicks burnt alive in fire at farm

Quick action by firefighters stops flames from spreading to other coops and saves more than 20,000 chicks.

KUANTAN: More than 28,000 chicks were charred in a fire at a farm in Kampung Rimbun, Maran this morning.

Maran Fire and Rescue Station head Shamsul Affendy Sulaiman said the station received a call at 4.07am before rushing to the location with three fire engines and 11 firemen.

“Upon reaching the scene, the fire was found to have razed almost the entire 16,000 sq ft enclosure holding more than 28,000 chicks.

“However, the quick action of firefighters in controlling the flames from spreading to other coops saved more than 20,000 chicks,” he said when contacted here today.

According to him, a chicken feed store and a workers’ quarters were also partially damaged in the blaze. Fortunately three workers sleeping in the hut were not hurt.

He said the cause of the fire and the total amount in losses were still being investigated.
