PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said this in explaining the high cost of pursuing legal action against whistleblower site Sarawak Report.
He said PAS’ suit is expected to cost the Islamist party some RM200,000 and that this is expected to increase.
“RM200,000 isn’t much actually, but seeing as how our currency has fallen, and the legal costs in London as well as bringing Malaysian witnesses there (it is costly). Who made the currency fall, it is Umno and BN,” Tuan Ibrahim said, when providing an update on the suit.
It was reported previously that PAS would take legal action against Sarawak Report in London over an article in which the whistleblower site alleged that RM90 million was “reckoned” to have entered the accounts of top PAS leaders.
It said this was one of Prime Minister Najib Razak’s attempts to “woo” the PAS leadership into supporting Barisan Nasional and Umno.
Tuan Ibrahim said the PAS leadership has called for PAS members to contribute a minimum of RM5 to PAS’ special fund for the suit, while PAS leaders are urged to fork out a minimum of RM100.
Last week, at the PAS youth wing’s muktamar, Tuan Ibrahim announced the launch of the fund to raise money for the legal costs.
He said even though it would be costly to sue Sarawak Report, this was necessary to defend the party’s honour and good name.
