
Referring to Azmin’s comment that Jakim had also given the green light for the concert held in Shah Alam, Jakim director-general Othman Mustapha said it was not responsible for giving approval for concerts or other live shows.
“Allegations such as these can hurt the reputation and credibility of Jakim as an agency in charge of Islamic affairs in the country,” Othman said in a statement released today.
Azmin had sought to deflect the blame that had been placed on the PKR-led Selangor government by PAS on the issue of the concert by the American pop star.
In response to PAS’ youth wing saying they wanted to cut ties with PKR because the latter had allowed the concert to go-ahead, Azmin said the party should not be held responsible, as Jakim had also given its approval.
Othman said no one should make statements referring to Jakim before checking with them first.
“I seek the cooperation of parties to refer to us first before making any statements related to Jakim,” Othman said.
Last July, PAS staged protests calling for the concert to be cancelled in the majority Muslim city, citing Gomez’s penchant for wearing revealing dresses on stage and bad influence on youths here, among other things.
