KUALA LUMPUR: All toll plazas along the North-South Expressway (PLUS) and the Elite Highway began operating electronically from today at 12.30pm.

PLUS Malaysia Bhd managing director Azman Ismail said with the implementation of the final phase today, all 94 toll plazas under PLUS had become cashless.

He said there would be no more cash transactions at PLUS toll plazas.

Highway users will pay using electronic cards, namely PLUSMiles, Touch ‘n Go and SmartTag.

Azman said the move will make transactions at toll plazas easier and more comfortable.

“Electronic toll collection systems are three times faster than the manual cash system,” he told reporters after the implementation of the full electronic toll collection system at the Sungai Besi toll plaza here today.

Azman said the SmartTag lanes were capable of handling 16 vehicles per minute (or 1,000 vehicles per hour).

The Touch ‘n Go lanes can handle 10 vehicles per minute (or 600 vehicles per hour).

This compares to the cash lanes which used to handle three vehicles per minute (180 transactions per hour).

“Sales and top-up lanes will be opened to enable the road users to purchase their electronic cards upon entering the highway.

“I also advise people with cards to top-up before entering the highway so that they don’t have to queue at the top-up lanes,” said Azman.

He said motorists can top-up at 9,000 locations nationwide, including at automated teller machines, petrol stations and 24-hour convenience stores.

Azman said PLUS toll workers affected by the electronic migration would be retained to help motorists facing problems at the toll lanes.

Some of the staff will be transferred to other places.
