He was charged under Sections 32(8)(c) and 89 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act for providing forged documents as valid documents and giving false evidence.
Four charges are under Section 89 while two others are under Section 32(8)(c).
Adam was said to have committed the offences at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya between Feb 10 and Feb 22.
The maximum custodial sentence under the anti-money laundering law is five years’ jail, RM3 million fine, or both.
Sessions Court judge Allaudeen Ismail granted Adam bail of RM300,000 in one surety for all the charges.
The court ordered that his passport be impounded, and fixed May 29 for the case to be mentioned again.
Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib, from the MACC, appeared for the prosecution while Adam was represented by Ahmad Zaidi Zainal.
Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin was present in court today, along with Adam’s family members and supporters.
As he was taken out of the court, his supporters shouted, “Reformasi”, “Lawan tetap lawan” and “Hidup Adam”.
Adam appeared to be smiling as he left.
Outside the court, meanwhile, Zuraida told reporters that the charges against Adam were “absurd”, as was the RM300,000 bail set by the court.
“But his family will try to raise the money.”
She also reiterated that Adam was never formally appointed as her special officer.
“He is the Ampang PKR youth chief. So in that capacity, he carried out work for the constituency of which I am the MP.
“So the outsiders may perceive him as my special officer, but he was never specially appointed as one.”
Last Thursday, the 29-year-old was arrested by MACC for investigation into his “unusual” wealth.
He had gone to the commission’s headquarters to have his statement recorded for the second time, the first being on Feb 10.
Adam’s alleged wealth came to public knowledge after Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos claimed that he owned a bungalow and a number of luxury cars, despite having held a post in PKR for only one term.
Adam denied any wrongdoing and said his wealth had come from business ventures and an inheritance.
Yesterday, MACC seized Adam’s RM1.2 million castle-styled bungalow and five luxury cars.
His bank account, and that of his wife, which contain over RM212,000, were also frozen.
