D Manivannan was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murdering V Kandasamy on July 27, 2016 at Jalan Taman Ibu Kota, Setapak.
If convicted, the 33-year-old will be sentenced to death.
No plea was recorded before Magistrate Siti Radziah Kamarudin.
The court fixed the next mention date on May 29.
Aftal Mariz Mohamed prosecuted while Manivannan was represented by lawyer Nur-Ezzah Abdullah.
The deceased, identified as a moneylender, was driving along the road near the Setapak Central mall, when four men in motorcycles approached and shot him 16 times in broad daylight.
Police said two motorcycles went to the victim’s left and right sides of his car and fired the gunshots.
A video on the shooting had gone viral on social media.
