‘Wrong way’ teen to be charged with driving under influence

Police say decision was made following talks with the attorney-general.

GEORGE TOWN: The teenager who drove against traffic on the North-South Expressway (PLUS), causing a nine-vehicle accident and killing one person, will be charged with driving under the influence in court tomorrow, police said today.

Central Seberang Prai police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said Ng Pei Ven, 19, would be charged under Section 44 (1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Nik Ros said the decision was reached after Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali decided to proffer the charge on Wednesday, following deliberation on the investigation papers.

This will be the second charge filed against Ng in court. Last Friday, she was charged with substance abuse at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court.

Last Tuesday, Ng drove her Proton Gen.2 against traffic before the Sungai Dua northbound toll plaza, crashing into a total of nine vehicles.

Mohamad Fandi Rosli, 26, of Sungai Petani, Kedah, was killed on the spot when her Proton slammed head-on into his Perodua Kelisa.

Ng told police that she had made an abrupt U-turn after she saw a lorry stalled in the middle lane before the toll plaza.

However, police say there was no such lorry, as proven by video footage obtained from PLUS.

Ng had later tested positive for amphetamines. She was charged at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court for consuming an illegal drug under the Dangerous Drugs Act. She pleaded not guilty.

Ng is currently out on bail.
