Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said a report against former Batu Uban rep S Raveentharan was received yesterday in regards to his Facebook post.
Raveentharan had shared a Malay Mail Online story on Zakir Naik calling critics “terrorists”, with the caption “firstly Islam was never a religion of peace” on Facebook.
Raveentharan, who is a lawyer, has since retracted the post and put out an apology on FB.
Mior said a police report by a non-governmental organisation called “Pertubuhan Penyebaran Islam Antarabangsa” had lodged a police report over Raveentharan’s FB post yesterday.
Mior said Raveentharan’s statement has been recorded and the investigation was ongoing.
The case will be investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code for uttering words with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.
The Penal Code offence carries a year’s jail term and fine while the internet law offence carries a RM50,000 fine and possible one-year jail term.
Raveentharan told FMT that he had given his statement at the Pattani Road police station this afternoon and did not want to comment further.
