
They also expressed interest to help the Malaysians stranded in North Korea after the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un barred them from leaving.
“There should be a peace-making mission comprising parliamentarians from both the government and the opposition, to help solve this problem” Batu Gajah MPV Sivakumar told a press conference in Parliament here today.
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng who was also present, said the DAP appreciated what the government is doing to get the Malaysians back. He also called for the government to do all it can to make this peace-making mission a reality.
But when asked if they will go to North Korea if needed, Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik said they would go to a “neutral country”.
Meanwhile, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, when met outside the Dewan Rakyat, condemned North Korea’s “uncivilised actions”.
“We should move for a resolution at the United Nations to condemn this action by the North Koreans, because preventing Malaysians from leaving is against the Vienna convention.
“We should sever ties with North Korea. It is definitely not a country that is worth having diplomatic ties with,” Guan Eng said.
Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein yesterday said that ties between the two countries have definitely been affected by the events that unfolded since the murder of Kim Jong Nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, at the klia2 on Feb 13.
The decision to stop Malaysians in North Korea from leaving the country came after the Malaysian government expelled its ambassador here.
In light of the North Korean action, Prime Minister Najib Razak called for an emergency meeting of the National Security Council (NSC).
“This abhorrent act, effectively holding our citizens hostage, is in total disregard of all international law and diplomatic norms,” Najib said in his strongest denunciation yet of Pyongyang since the diplomatic crisis was triggered by Jong Nam’s murder.
North Korea and Malaysia established diplomatic ties in 1973, but it was not until the early part of the last decade that both countries had firmed the relationship with the opening of full-fledged diplomatic missions.
