JOHOR BAHRU:
Police have arrested a teenager who urged the public to gather and seek an audience with the Sultan of Johor over the recent cycling accident in the state.

Johor police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the 18-year-old boy was detained at Taman Desa Cemerlang, Ulu Tiram at about 1.45am on Wednesday.

This followed a police report made by a member of the public on Monday in connection with a Facebook post calling on the people, especially youths who cycle, to gather and seek an audience with Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar. The post also called for a meeting with the police.

According to Wan Ahmad, spreading the statement could threaten the nation’s harmony and well-being.

“Following the arrest, police seized a Galaxy Note 2 handphone for investigation,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment up to one year, or both, and a fine of RM1,000 for each subsequent sentence.

In the cycling accident at Jalan Lingkaran Dalam here last Saturday, eight teenagers died and eight others were injured at 3am when a car driven by a woman ploughed into them.
