Gobind: Clear direction, agreement needed to challenge BN

Puchong MP says charting out common policy framework a must and more important than talk of putting coalition first and having common logo.

PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Gobind Singh Deo has reminded the opposition that it is not enough to just “speak about threats of a kleptocracy and the need to deal with it” in moving forward to mount a challenge against Barisan Nasional (BN).

The Puchong MP said it was instead more important that the opposition be clear in its direction for the country.

“We must be clear in what it is we want and what direction we will take in the event we succeed in defeating Barisan Nasional. We need to start making our position clear now in the run-up to the coming elections.

“Pakatan Harapan and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) need to step up efforts to first chart out their common policy framework which will form the basis of the coalition for the next elections and thereafter,” the DAP’s national legal bureau secretary said in a statement released today.

Gobind added such efforts were also more important than talking about putting the coalition first or having a common logo, in what was seen as a reference to comments made recently by PPBM chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Speaking at a fund-raising event hosted by Lembah Pantai PKR division in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday night, the former prime minister said opposition parties must prioritise their coalition first if they were to succeed at the upcoming polls.

“The opposition coalition must learn to help one another. They must not only think of their own party but think of the coalition.

“It is the coalition that must win. Don’t think about the party any more,” Mahathir was quoted as saying.

However, Gobind said the priority was to ensure that all parties can commit to an agreement and remain in a solid working relationship.

“People need to be convinced that we are not just here to achieve a one-off short-term objective but that we are here to stay and that we can offer something better than what they currently already have.

“Without this agreement, a common logo and a coalition would lose its real significance and appeal as people may not be convinced of the opposition coalition’s viability in the long run.”
