DAP's Liew Chin Tong tells MCA to remember what it was like for Chinese-Malaysians to cheer Thomas Cup matches against China.

PETALING JAYA: Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong has called on his rival party to remember what it was like to see Chinese-Malaysians root for their home side against the China players whenever the two countries met in the Thomas Cup matches.

This was in response to MCA leaders slamming him over his statements alleging that MCA was serving as China’s agent with the formation of MCA’s Belt and Road Centre and a People’s Republic of China Affairs Committee.

“MCA leaders are hoping that using the China card and calling DAP anti-China will help them gain traction among Chinese-Malaysians,” Liew said in a statement today.

“Malaysians should know that Prime Minister Najib Razak will depend on China’s money to rescue 1MDB and other financial woes while MCA hopes that Chinese-Malaysians agree with it that ‘everything China’ is good for them.”

He said Chinese-Malaysians need to look at the Thomas Cup badminton matches between China and Malaysia as a reminder that Malaysians, regardless of race, ought to be rooting for Malaysia.

“When Malaysia battles China in the Thomas Cup, who should we root for? Of course every Malaysian will cheer for our Malaysian team.

“Liew said Pakatan Harapan and Bersatu (PPBM) will have to define what they meant to be Malaysian interests in our relationship with China, as well as in all other political debates in the months to come.

“It is crucial for a Team Malaysia vision to emerge in the ultimate fight of bringing forth a new Malaysia.”

On cooperation with PPBM, Liew said he was aware that many have argued for caution due to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s past and the fact that many PPBM leaders and members were previously from Umno.

“Hence, many have suggested that such cooperation be limited in nature and for utilitarian or electoral purposes only. I beg to differ.”

He said, instead, that Pakatan and PPBM should align closer to ensure that Pakatan Harapan and PPBM supporters vote for each other, not just for utilitarian reasons, but to have them vote enthusiastically and prepare to govern together.

“Pakatan Harapan component parties and Bersatu not only have to win but we have to win resoundingly, with a very convincing margin to ensure a stable government.

“Only with a Malay tsunami and very strong support among non-Malays for change can we see a stable new government with more than 130 seats in the 222-seat parliament.”

For greater realignment between Pakatan Harapan and PPBM, Liew urged Mahathir and other PPBM leaders to be more proactive in addressing concerns about the excesses of the Mahathir era.

“Some forms of concessions and reconciliations, even apologies, with the past cannot be avoided for too long.

“More importantly, Pakatan Harapan and Bersatu need to articulate a new vision that builds trust among supporters, across ethnic groups, and across the South China Sea with Sabah and Sarawak, so that eventually a Malay tsunami meets with a general Malaysian tsunami.”
