SEGAMAT:
Some 6,000 soldiers from five brigades have been deployed to help thousands of flood victims in five states, said Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

The army has been mobilised in Johor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor and Sabah, according to Bernama quoting the defence minister.

“I hope our military personnel are not just being seen, but their presence is also felt by the people who are going through the hardships during the floods,” he told reporters after visiting a temporary relief centre at a school in Segamat, the worst hit town in Johor with more than 5,000 forced to leave their homes.

He said the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s assets as well as four teams from the Royal Medical Corps would also be deployed to help flood victims in Johor and Kelantan.

The army will also carry out repair works on bridges damaged by the floods, seen as the worst since the big floods of 2014-2015 which claimed 21 lives and forced more than 200,000 to flee their homes.

More than 20,000 people are currently seeking shelter at 187 relief centres nationwide.

Segamat in Johor remains the worst affected, and as of 5am today, there were 7,323 victims in 62 centres.

The floods in the state have also claimed two lives. The bodies of Mohd Faiz Syafiq, 21, and Tarmin Katimun, 58, were retrieved yesterday.
