PETALING JAYA:
A local university has allegedly used its orientation week to “brainwash” its new students by painting a negative image of a student activist from another university.

This came to light when slides on Anis Syafiqah Md Yusof, the student activist from Universiti Malaya who organised the #TangkapMO1 rally last year, were spread through Facebook.

On top of one of the pictures was the title “We admit our academics are not good”. Below the picture was another caption: “Is it wrong that we are with the opposition?”

Besides that, there were also slides containing pictures of street demonstrations, captioned with statements like “Creating chaos”.

The programme was believed to be part of an information session with the authorities during the university’s orientation week at its campus in Selangor.

FMT is still trying to contact the university concerned for their comments.

Anis, when asked what she thought of the university’s move to use her as part of its orientation week programme, said she had never even uttered the words attributed to her.

“There is no video that can prove I said any of those things they claimed I said.

“I’m very disappointed the posters have been used as material to brainwash the university’s new students,” she said.

Anis was suspended for a semester and fined RM400 for organising the rally.

Meanwhile, Perak DAP Youth chief Howard Lee, in a statement, said orientation week is supposed to be a medium to introduce campus life to new students.

This, however, has been misused for the political interests by some quarters, he said.
