PETALING JAYA: Azizul Annuar Adenan, youngest son of the late Sarawak chief minister Adenan Satem, is the leading candidate for the Tanjung Datu state seat.

A source close to the family told FMT that Azizul was the likeliest person to be fielded for the seat left vacant by Adenan, who died from heart complications last week.

A political analyst from Universiti Malaya, Awang Azman Pawi, had over the weekend, told FMT that Azizul would be a good candidate as he was well educated and widely admired for his humble attitude.

“In fact, he represents the new generation of Sarawakian leaders. He has talent in politics and I believe he will win big in the Tanjung Datu contest,” added Awang Azman.

Azizul, 26, graduated with a degree in economics from Murdoch University, Australia.

He is also active in sports, leading several organisations in Sarawak, including in golf and taekwondo.

Azizul has often participated in events to assist those who are less fortunate.

During a Go Bald event last year, Azizul got 20 of his relatives and friends to shave their heads, and the group collected RM100,000 in just one week, The Borneo Post had reported.

Go Bald 2016 was an event organised to raise funds to support cancer-stricken children.

Adenan’s wife, Jamilah Anu, is also seen as a potential candidate for the Tanjung Datu seat. However, the source who spoke to FMT said she was reluctant to contest in the by-election.

Adenan was hugely credited for leading Sarawak BN to a landslide victory in the state election last year, securing 72 of the 82 state seats. He won the Tanjung Datu seat with a majority of 5,892 votes.
